About
La Farm Bakery: A Master Baker’s Artisan Bread in Cary
On NW Cary Parkway, La Farm Bakery has spent more than two decades bringing authentic French artisan bread to the Triangle. Part European boulangerie, part neighborhood café, the original Cary location is the flagship of one of North Carolina’s most celebrated independent bakeries.
The Vision of a Master Baker
La Farm was founded in 1999 by French-born master baker Lionel Vatinet. Vatinet trained in France with Les Compagnons du Devoir—an elite craft guild he joined at sixteen—earning the title of Maître Boulanger, or Master Baker, after a rigorous apprenticeship. He spent years teaching and consulting on bread around the world before settling in Cary to build a bakery devoted to traditional, hand-crafted loaves.
Bread Made the Old Way
The heart of La Farm is its bread. Loaves are baked fresh daily in a European-style hearth oven using a multi-day fermentation process, with no preservatives or shortcuts. The signature La Farm Bread—a large, crusty, naturally leavened sourdough boule—anchors a lineup of some fifteen core breads plus rotating seasonal varieties, from Asiago-Parmesan to the popular white-chocolate mini baguettes.
More Than a Bakery
Beyond the bread counter, La Farm serves as a full café: flaky pastries and croissants, quiche, tartines, sandwiches like the croque madame, and coffee to linger over. It’s a place that works for a quick morning pastry, a relaxed lunch, or a special-occasion cake.
National Recognition
Vatinet’s craft has earned wide acclaim, including a James Beard Foundation semifinalist nod for Outstanding Baker in 2015, and he shared his techniques in the cookbook A Passion for Bread: Lessons from a Master Baker. Through it all, La Farm has remained a proudly independent Cary institution.
Plan Your Visit
La Farm is open daily from early morning into the evening. Popular loaves can sell out later in the day, so come early if there’s a specific bread you’re after—and don’t leave without something from the pastry case.
