About
Foundation
Tucked behind a single rusted door and down a flight of stairs off the bustle of Fayetteville Street, Foundation has been downtown Raleigh’s cocktail cornerstone since it opened on March 4, 2009. Builder Will Alphin and architect Vincent Whitehurst discovered the raw, red-clay crawl space beneath a historic downtown building and decided to excavate it into a neighborhood bar. What they created is widely credited as Raleigh’s first modern craft cocktail bar, and more than fifteen years later it remains a defining stop on any local drinking tour.
North Carolina in Every Glass
From day one, Foundation built its identity around what North Carolina and the surrounding region could offer. The bar pours only North Carolina draft beer, favors domestic and regionally sourced spirits and wines, and makes as much as possible in house, from its own sodas and syrups to fresh-squeezed juices. Behind the bar sits a deep whiskey and bourbon list that gives bartenders room to improvise, while a rotating cocktail menu leans on seasonal produce, including peaches and berries pulled from nearby farmers markets. It is farm-to-glass thinking that took root here long before the idea became a trend, and that commitment to sourcing close to home still shapes every list.
The Drinks That Made a Name
The cocktails have earned Foundation its reputation. The Charleston Sour appeared on the very first menu and still anchors the list, combining Firefly sweet tea vodka, fresh lemon, simple syrup and a silky cap of egg white. Regulars will also tell you the bar makes what many consider the best Old-Fashioned in town, built from that formidable whiskey selection, house bitters and a single clear cube of ice. Seasonal drinks like The Peach Man show off the kitchen-minded approach, turning ripe summer stone fruit into something tart, bright and fleeting. Order at the bar and you will often watch a drink built from scratch, syrups and juices included.
An Underground Sense of Place
Part of Foundation’s charm is simply being underground. The room keeps its original brick foundation walls and heavy crossbeams, dimly and thoughtfully lit so the space feels cool, intimate and a little hidden even on a busy night. Moody lighting, low music that drifts between jazz and vintage synth, and a short local beer list on draught complete the mood. It is the kind of place that rewards lingering over one carefully made drink rather than rushing through a round, and the tight quarters mean conversations tend to spill easily between neighbors along the bar.
A Training Ground for Raleigh’s Bar Scene
Foundation’s influence reaches well beyond its own basement. The bar has served as a training ground for a generation of Raleigh bartenders, many of whom went on to open their own respected spots, among them Dram and Draught, SideBar, Bittersweet and Johnson Street Yacht Club. In 2024 the bar marked its fifteenth anniversary alongside a gradual ownership transition, with longtime bartender Kyle Hankin stepping into the lead while founders Alphin and Whitehurst stayed on in an advisory role. The result is a bar that has evolved without losing the independent, place-first spirit it was designed around.
Planning Your Visit
Foundation sits at 213 Fayetteville Street, Suite 010, in the heart of downtown Raleigh, an easy walk from Moore Square, the convention center and the city’s theaters and restaurants. It opens in the late afternoon and runs late into the night, welcoming walk-ins rather than reservations, so it works equally well as a first stop or a nightcap. Whether you are a bourbon devotee chasing that famous Old-Fashioned or a curious visitor looking for the bar that helped start Raleigh’s cocktail renaissance, a descent down these stairs is a downtown rite of passage.
