About
Bull City Burger and Brewery
Tucked into a historic storefront on East Parrish Street, Bull City Burger and Brewery has become a downtown Durham institution. Since opening its doors in 2011, this independent, locally owned burger restaurant and on-site brewery has built a devoted following by doing the simple things exceptionally well: sourcing thick, North Carolina raised grass-fed beef, baking its own buns, and brewing its own beer just steps from where it is poured. Owner Seth Gross set out to prove that a neighborhood burger joint could take its ingredients as seriously as any fine-dining kitchen, and the result is a warm, unpretentious spot where quality and craft meet.
A Burger Worth the Trip
The heart of the menu is, of course, the burger. Bull City builds each one on pasture-raised beef free of added hormones and antibiotics, then finishes it on a house-made bun that arrives soft and fresh. You can build your own or reach for a signature creation like the Bacon, Blue, and BBQ Burger, the Pimento Burger, or the classic done right. Nearly everything is made in-house, from the sauerkraut to the bacon to the sauces, a level of from-scratch commitment that is rare for a casual counter. Veggie burgers and house-made all-beef hot dogs round out the lineup, so no one in the group is left out.
Brewed On Site
True to its name, Bull City is as much a brewery as a burger house. The taps pour beers brewed right on the premises, giving the space the easygoing feel of a proper brewpub rather than a chain restaurant. It is widely recognized as Durham’s longest-operating brewpub, and the rotating house beers are designed to pair naturally with the salt, char and richness of a good burger. Cocktails, non-alcoholic options and a handful of appetizers and scratch-made desserts fill out the rest of the menu, making it easy to settle in for a full meal rather than a quick bite.
Rooted in Local Agriculture
What sets Bull City apart is its steady emphasis on local agriculture. The kitchen leans on regional farms and grass-fed beef, treating sourcing as the starting point for everything that follows. That philosophy shows up in the flavor, and it has helped the restaurant earn national attention over the years, including features in food media that celebrate its commitment to doing things the hard, honest way. For diners, it means a burger that tastes like it was made by people who care about where the ingredients came from.
The Downtown Experience
Located at 107 E. Parrish St. in the center of downtown Durham, Bull City sits within easy walking distance of the American Tobacco Campus, the Durham Performing Arts Center and the offices and shops of the city core. The kitchen famously opens at 11:11 a.m., a quirky nod that regulars have come to love, and the restaurant serves lunch, dinner and everything in between seven days a week. Outdoor seating makes it a pleasant stop on a mild North Carolina afternoon, and the central location makes it a natural anchor for a day spent exploring the Bull City.
Plan Your Visit
Bull City Burger and Brewery is open Monday through Thursday from 11:11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday until 10:00 p.m., and Sunday until 9:00 p.m. Reservations are not part of the walk-up, order-at-the-counter spirit of the place, so plan to arrive, order and grab a seat. Whether you are a longtime Durham local or a first-time visitor, this is a reliable, welcoming table for a grass-fed burger and a cold, house-brewed beer in the heart of the city.
