About
Irregardless Cafe
Long before farm-to-table became a buzzword, Irregardless was already living it. Opened in 1975 near the western edge of downtown Raleigh, this independent cafe has spent five decades sourcing from local farms, championing vegetables and seafood, and filling its dining room with live music almost every night. It is one of the Triangle’s most enduring restaurants, and it remains open and thriving at 901 W Morgan St, a short walk from Boylan Heights and the warehouse district.
A Farm-to-Table Pioneer
When founder Arthur Gordon opened Irregardless in the mid-1970s, buying directly from farmers markets and small growers was a novelty rather than a marketing line. The restaurant leaned into it from day one, and it never let go. Today the kitchen still builds its menu around what is in season, and the restaurant even grows produce at its own Well Fed Community Garden a few miles away. That commitment to fresh, local, and sustainable ingredients has earned Irregardless a loyal following and a reputation as one of Raleigh’s original food pioneers. Generations of Raleigh diners have marked birthdays, anniversaries, and ordinary Tuesdays here, and the restaurant’s fiftieth anniversary in 2025 was a milestone few independent restaurants ever reach. The dining room itself is unpretentious and welcoming, with a garden patio that comes into its own in the warmer months.
A Menu Built for Sharing
The dinner menu is designed to bring people together, with imaginatively prepared meats and seafood sitting comfortably alongside a deep bench of vegetarian and vegan options. You might start with hummus or falafel, then move on to a grilled New York steak with chimichurri and cauliflower gratin, skin-on Atlantic salmon with aji amarillo sauce, or a roasted vegetable curry served with crispy tofu or Indian-spiced chicken. The Irregardless burger, available with an Angus or black bean patty, is a longtime favorite. Desserts are made in-house, and the wine list and local microbrews are chosen to be approachable and fairly priced.
Vegetarian-Friendly by Design
Few Raleigh restaurants have championed plant-based eating as long or as sincerely as Irregardless. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free dishes are not afterthoughts here; they are threaded through every menu, from the eggplant tower with mozzarella and vodka sauce to the vegetable curry and a rotating cast of seasonal produce plates. It is the rare place where a mixed table of meat lovers, vegetarians, and vegans can all order enthusiastically from the same menu, which is exactly what the founders set out to do half a century ago.
Live Music Every Night
Irregardless has billed itself as a home for live music since 1975, and the calendar backs that up. Weeknights bring bluegrass, traditional roots, folk, and jazz musicians to the dining room, setting a warm, unhurried tone for dinner. On Saturday evenings, dinner music gives way to the Jazz Club Show, with regional ensembles playing from 9pm to midnight. It is worth checking the events page before you go, because the lineup changes often and the music is a genuine part of the experience rather than background noise.
Brunch, Hours, and Planning Your Visit
Weekend brunch is a highlight, served Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 2:30pm, with dishes like shrimp and grits, a crab cake Benedict, and chicken and waffles on a gluten-free waffle. Lunch runs Tuesday through Friday, and dinner is served Tuesday through Sunday; the restaurant is closed on Mondays. Reservations are easy to make online through OpenTable and are a smart idea on music nights and weekend mornings. With its West Raleigh location just off Hillsborough Street, on-site parking, and a fifty-year history of doing things its own way, Irregardless remains a defining part of the city’s dining scene. Whether you come for a leisurely brunch, a vegetarian dinner, or an evening of live jazz, it is an easy recommendation for visitors and locals alike.
